A Christian Service of Asbury First United Methodist Church storehouse.gif

Purpose

The purpose of the Asbury Storehouse is to distribute donations of clothing, kitchenware and bedding, free of charge, to people who are referred to us from social agencies, health care facilities and churches in the Rochester area. Its mission is to use the resources we have to the maximum extent possible to touch human lives with Christ's love and caring. We hope this is conveyed through our actions.

Clients

Families and individuals are sent to us by over 50 different agencies, churches, schools, health care facilities and halfway houses. We are proud to serve over 6,000 persons a year. Clients come to us by appointment only, with a letter of referral from a worker who has personal knowledge of needs. We apportion clothing, which they may choose for themselves, and use limits for bedding which facilitate fair and equal distribution of all donations according to need. Clients are very appreciative and frequently comment on what a help this service is to them.

Volunteers

Over 150 volunteers from many different churches in the area staff the Storehouse. Some of these churches include: Asbury First, Seneca, Penfield, Webster, Greece, Ionia, Covenant, Rush and Christ View United Methodist Churches, Third and Twelve Corner's Presbytarian Churches and First Congregational United Church of Christ of Fairport. There are sorters, seamstresses, size markers, clerks and receptionists, in addition to those who gather materials for us from motels, consignment shops and garage sales. We are open four days a week throughout the year. The need for additional help is always there and we truly appreciate assistance from any that want to help.

Articles should be clean and in good condition. A receipt for tax purposes is available - include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a complete list of donated items in order to have a receipt returned to you. Donations may be brought into the Storehouse during client hours or to the outside enclosed receiving area on Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Our facilities are located in the lower level of 1050 East Avenue, at the rear of that building which is adjacent to Asbury First United Methodist Church.
